A First Time Writer/Director’s Trial by Fire, Part #5: Not Wise to Ignore David Lynch

I was going to post about the fun and vitality of look books. Removing the writer’s hat and stepping into the director’s shoes to create the bridge that offers potential producers, managers or investors a first glimpse into how you intend to transform your story into a visually vibrant world. Next time. After reading an inspiring article by Ariston Anderson in Filmmaker Magazine about David Lynch, I slammed on my brakes to focus on a more esoteric topic: hope.

DL: “Looking back I did not have much self-assuredness in the beginning.”

Whether you enjoy his work or not, David Lynch is one of the most unique cinematic artists of our generation.

Filmonomics: Let The Right Ones In

By Colin Brown

Think you’ve got problems getting your films financed and seen by audiences? Well, you are in shockingly good company. In recent weeks, everyone from Steven Spielberg and George Lucas to Steven SoderberghJohn TravoltaMike FiggisDavid Lynch and Lynda Obst have all bemoaned the near-impossibility of getting their own pet projects onto the big screen. Taken together, their published comments are a scathing indictment of a film establishment that is only obsessed with pre-assembled projects that pander to the planet’s widest common denominators.

Martin Scorsese, Steven Soderbergh, David Lynch and many others debate the digital revolution on Tribecafilm.com

Tribecafilm.com launches a month of conversation around the upcoming documentary release Side By Side today. Each day a new exclusive clip will post from one of the film’s prognosticators that couldn’t be squeezed into the final cut of the film. The clips will offer a daily opportunity to follow the debate on the digital revolution that is portrayed in this seminal film.

Side by Side, produced by Keanu Reeves and directed by Chris Kenneally, explores the complex and divisive conversation currently taking place around the transition from traditional filmmaking to the new digital revolution. Since the invention of cinema, the standard format for recording moving images has been film. With such a contentious subject, everyone had a lot to say. Thinking Aloud About Sound

FilmInFocus is the rare studio-sponsored site that is not all about promoting their product (well, not exclusively).  It fosters a community of cineastes.

FIF has a featured article on David Lynch On Sound.  I love articles like this because frankly sound is always an afterthought for me on my films and I have been trying to change that.  Finally setting up a home theater sound system was a big step forward this year.  Lynch is always a fun read (and a funner watch) because his mind is one of a kind.

It also made me recall this great article by Antonioni on NYC In Sound (with a forward by Walter Murch no less!).
