Who Did What For Me When: Sharing Knowledge

I want to give thanks.  I want to show gratitude.  I want to encourage others to do likewise.  But most of all I want to share what I have learned so that others can utilize it to.  All of it is one big” thank you”.  This blog (not just this blog post) is a big thank you informed by those who gave to me when I still had so little.

This post is a shout out to those who taught me the process and business of film.

Christine Vachon and I Explain It ALL For You

Yup, here’s how we started, what allowed us to get our first films made, what secrets we learned, what models we used, and how it is all is changing.  This video is from a few years back, but it is still mostly all still very relevant and pertinent.

Hollywood “Bombs” And Why The Film Biz Is Falling Apart

I must confess, even more than watching, even more than making, I LOVE talking about film. I particularly like it when I get to do it with a great group of passionate & knowledgable folk — as I just did. On Friday, I was invited to join just that type of conversation on Chicago NPR radio WBEZ. The pleasure for me comes from the same thing that leads me to blog: I think if  we are willing to share our thoughts and hopes, we may just find our way to a better place.

ALL Entertainment Should Increase The Current Value Proposition

Chris Dorr’s recent post on MoviePass helped me recognize the world as it truly is today.  It wasn’t MoviePass that I needed to recognize.  It was that the same thing that allowed Independent Film to flourish is the same thing that is now spurring on innovation everywhere.  Once filmmakers stopped asking for permission to tell their stories, the floodgates opened to a far more diverse approach to culture generation.  To the powers that be the end of permission looks like anarchy, but to the leaders to come, this is the stepping stone to necessary change.  And we are seeing that now.

James Schamus & Christine Vachon Live On YouTube!

My former business partner and a regular collaborator of mine — both good friends — will be speaking live at Independent Film Week in 30 minutes at 4P EST. They know as much as anyone on the past & present of indie film;  maybe they can see the future too.  You can watch it live for free on
