May All Our Buildings Come Alive! Projection Mapping Is Awesome!

Okay, so yes, this is a commercial for Android, but it pretty darn amazing. I saw another projection mapping project about a year ago in NYC as part of the Vimeo Awards at the IAC center, and was blown away by that too.

Imagine a “festival” where a city had a multiple of these set up, all with a bit of an interlocking story to them. If I was opening a building, a museum show, or having some sort of city-wide event, I would want to have something like this as part of it.

  • There are mapping festivals. 

    Mapping Festival just happened in Geneva. Here is the website:http://mappingfestival.ch/2011... Nova has incorporated mapping stuff into their festivals http://rojo-nova.com/Check out the work of 1024 Architecture, Seeper (who did the Vimeo Fest Mapping), Trafik, Telenoika, SuperBien, AntiVJ, etc. And Robert Siedel does some cool object-oriented mapping. The DJ Amon Tobin has a really cool live set with a projection mapped structure on stage. The collective Macula did a more narrative-oriented mapping chronicling the history of Liverpool earlier this year: http://vimeo.com/26827092A lot of these types of festivals actually happen a lot in Europe (Ars Electronica, Transmediale, etc) Mapping projects will happen on a weekly basis. A lot of the reasons it isn't as prevalent in the US is because of its close ties to electronic music which isn't very popular here. Also, it's expensive. Not a lot of funding for these kinds of things. Nuit Blanche: Bring the Light NYC (in Greenpoint a month or so ago) had some minor projection mapping. There was "Immersive Surfaces" in DUMBO a little while ago too which was interactive, apparentlyhttp://thecreatorspr... the Festival Ideas they did some 'projection mapping' onto the New Museum but I heard it wasn't very impressive. There's a major difference between simply projecting an image onto facade and programming the projection specifically to the contours of the building.I have been interested for a while in the possibilities of incorporating mapping into filmmaking. Put more emphasis on the formal elements of exhibition as an extension of the content. edit: no line breaks is the worst
